Bird table reviews… Mmm

3 February 2014

One very interesting ‘fact’ I picked up in my searching around looking at bird table reviews and advice given, was that birds prefer natural colours and a table that blends in to the garden. This caught my attention – is there really any evidence of this? I would question this suggestion. Please do leave a… Read More Bird table reviews… Mmm

No crowds… but a fair tally

31 January 2014

No surprises this year, but I was delighted to see 3x Dunnocks and 2x Robins for my one hour’s bird count for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2014. Naturally, numbers were down as expected but they were however a reasonable reflection of bird species visiting the garden just now so I was happy 🙂 Sunday,… Read More No crowds… but a fair tally

The Big Garden Birdwatch – why take part?

25 January 2014

My first thoughts are that it’s fun to do plus it’s a great garden record for year to year. The organisers, RSPB say: “Bird populations are a great indicator of the health of the countryside. That’s why it’s so important to take part in surveys like the Big Garden Birdwatch to keep an eye on… Read More The Big Garden Birdwatch – why take part?

Welcome… Buddleja ‘Buzz Ivory’

17 January 2014

In Autumn 2013, Buddleja ‘Buzz Ivory’ arrived in my garden. Plant Breeders’ Thompson & Morgan claim this plant to be a hardy shrub. I do hope this is the case as I am a bit nervous at the moment, knowing, that it is yet to feel a good Scottish winter cold snap growing here in… Read More Welcome… Buddleja ‘Buzz Ivory’

Birdwatch Count, Goodbye & GBBD

15 January 2014

The annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is at the end of the month and I have heaps to chat about but I’m off to a slow blogging start for 2014. My plan was (still is) to share observations at the bird feeders in a particular way to help and inspire people to take part with… Read More Birdwatch Count, Goodbye & GBBD

Dear Friend and Gardener – a book review and delight!

29 November 2013

Never making it to my bookshelf, Christmas or birthday wishlist, despite being picked up in bookshops many times over the years, when an email came in asking me if I wanted to review a copy of the New illustrated edition of ‘Dear Friend and Gardener’ introduced by Fergus Garrett… I was thrilled and smiling all… Read More Dear Friend and Gardener – a book review and delight!

Let’s jump and eat cake for year 8

19 November 2013

After seven years of gardenwatching and blogging, 2014 promises to be an interesting year of discovery for garden and blog visitors. I’m hoping for frogs, toads and dragonflies! Yay… my pond liner finally made its way from under the sofa indoors to outside in its permanent new home. Let the gardenwatching take a new phase… Read More Let’s jump and eat cake for year 8

GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
