November GBBD… last flower dash before snow?

15 November 2013

Despite the many miles between our gardens, mine in Perthshire Scotland and Carol’s in Indiana USA, today we both have flower buds on a Christmas rose! What fun it is to compare our gardens to other gardens around the world on the 15th of the month and Carol at May Dreams Gardens is the blogger… Read More November GBBD… last flower dash before snow?

Garden Nestbox… first Great tit rooster… yay!

9 November 2013

The list can be long for weekend garden jobs just now as we race between reasonable spells of weather and daylight. What jobs have you planned for this weekend? Have you cleaned out old nests from your nestboxes – perhaps you have seen birds looking in your garden nestboxes recently and wondered why? The drop… Read More Garden Nestbox… first Great tit rooster… yay!

Hooded Crows on holiday

30 October 2013

Oh dear… that’s the Dunvegan Castle Seal boat trip left without me 🙁 What’s that you said… it will be back in 25 minutes? Perhaps we could have lunch while we wait… is this table free? Ah… there’s a queuing system… are we the only ones observing it? Yum.. our sandwiches were tasty! Is that… Read More Hooded Crows on holiday

Seal boat trip at Dunvegan Castle, Scotland

22 October 2013

Dear wildlife watching friends, as you well know, holidays can afford new sightings and opportunities. Dunvegan Castle, on the Isle of Skye, wasn’t a completely new holiday visit for us having been there many years ago (bc). However, on our visit in September 2013, the opportunity to get close-up views of a colony of common… Read More Seal boat trip at Dunvegan Castle, Scotland

Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2013

18 October 2013

Dear gardening friends, may I ask you a question? What do you think – are garden/flower shows really worth visiting? Our expectations before we spend hours travelling, queuing at car parks and at ticket gates are perhaps just too great for the new and experienced gardeners amongst us. Yet, we make these trips again and… Read More Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2013

Wonderful, the Willow Warbler returns!

19 August 2013

The brief flash of yellow through dense green foliage outside my gardenwatching window signalled only one bird on Saturday morning! Now… I doubt it was the same bird I have seen pass through this same border, at around the same time of year, in the past two years (I suspect heading South on migration) but… Read More Wonderful, the Willow Warbler returns!

A reminder for tonight’s Perseid meteor shower in UK

12 August 2013

Fingers crossed we get a clear sky tonight. This annual Perseid meteor shower is something we’d really like to see again! It’s been a few years since we saw it for the first and only time. It was fascinating seeing the meteors flashing through the night sky – quite a spectacle! I strongly recommend this… Read More A reminder for tonight’s Perseid meteor shower in UK

Final weekend for UK Butterfly Count

10 August 2013

Tomorrow (Sunday 11th August) is the last day for counting butterflies for this year’s survey by Butterfly Conservation here in the UK. This weekend, if you are out in your garden, in a park or out on a walk anywhere, all they ask is you note down how many individual butterflies you can see at… Read More Final weekend for UK Butterfly Count

GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
