Welcome back… green!

6 January 2011

For me, Ferns are the best greens of all. After six weeks (feels like twice that) of a snow and ice covered garden our temps have been slowly rising and with odd rain showers in the last few days… we have the start of garden again! The evergreen Ferns behind my garden gate were looking… Read More Welcome back… green!

Introducing: Goldfinch Garden

4 January 2011

Wildlife in Cornwall is the title of Goldfinch Garden’s Channel at YouTube. Paul is the man behind the camera and the fantastic quality and range of bird and wildlife videos you’ll find there. It’s no surprise to me at all that he has 601 subscribers as of today. Paul says on his page “I would… Read More Introducing: Goldfinch Garden

23 December 2010

Just one sleep to Christmas Eve – now are you feeling festive or frazzled? In the later camp? Yes? Okay, here’s a welcome distraction that might help you unwind. Andrew over at TALES OF A WESSEX REIVER, has invited bloggers to join him for an informal Christmas Blogging-Bird Competition. A snow and bird filled week

3 December 2010

Let’s start with a walk shortly before sunset last Saturday. Back then, the gentle light snow decorated the landscape artistically. It blended in beautifully with the warm tones of Autumn. However, soon Winter was to seriously take charge. Clicking on all images in this post will enlarge them. Overnight and into Sunday saw more substantial… Read More A snow and bird filled week

One picture tells all…

24 November 2010

Over the weekend we spotted a grey squirrel in the garden. Seen on occasions tentative, followed by a quick leap towards something, followed by a run around everywhere this squirrel was not dissimilar to how I’ve been. Before I give a brief update there, I’d first like to extend huge thanks again to everyone who… Read More One picture tells all…

Waxwings still here :-)

15 November 2010

I hope I don’t jinx their stay by saying that! Especially as I am now trying to tempt them from the large mature trees they are preening and sunning themselves on to come down into my garden. I most likely have no chance in doing so but as you might expect, I’m giving it my… Read More Waxwings still here 🙂

Current garden birds and Waxwing sightings

13 November 2010

Garden birds were featured on this week’s BBC2 Autumnwatch programme. Regular blog visitors would be quite correct in thinking I found this a particularly interesting episode. Quick update: If a search for Waxwing sightings has brought you here perhaps the lists and links via my next post may interest you. You’ll find brief Waxwing videos… Read More Current garden birds and Waxwing sightings

Autumn, the best time to see…

3 November 2010

… The Meikleour Beech Hedge in Perthshire. Blog posts from around the world are celebrating the magnificent colours and beauty of Autumn just now. My planned contribution today was to be for Wordless Wednesday. Then, considering there were tall stories to tell, I changed my mind 😉 Clicking on the image above will enlarge it.… Read More Autumn, the best time to see…

GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
