New bird seed mix, new Coeliac & Blogaversary

28 November 2012

Would you ever believe it – gluten free bird food? I kid you not. Okay… perhaps I am slightly, however Blackbirds were feasting and fighting over pieces of gluten free breakfast health bar in my garden yesterday morning (homemade with rice flakes, apple juice, butter, soft brown sugar, eggs, nibbled almonds, sunflower seeds, chopped figs… Read More New bird seed mix, new Coeliac & Blogaversary

Shy female Great Spotted Woodpecker

16 November 2012

A 30 second video clip of a female Great Spotted Woodpecker at a garden feeder, although a very special first for me, would have taken the limelight away from a star sighting in my lengthy last post. So yes, you were right Sue, the ‘W’ was for Woodpecker too 🙂 What’s really special about this… Read More Shy female Great Spotted Woodpecker

I spy with my little eye… something beginning with ‘W’

13 November 2012

Would it be the white stripe on the back of the speedy Coal tits darting through almost every tree and shrub in my garden just now? …Nope 🙂 Would it be the white cheeks of the Coal tits as they briefly slow down before changing direction through the wonderful coral stems of my Acer tree?… Read More I spy with my little eye… something beginning with ‘W’

Friday gardenwatch catch-up

9 November 2012

In hindsight, I was feeling a bit sad when I browsed through many images (taken on the same day) for my previous Wordless post and I guess the power and draw of one single image showed. Yes, looking now at the tired and tearful Anemone I can see that it reflected pretty accurately myself at… Read More Friday gardenwatch catch-up

Oh my… a Great Spotted Woodpecker pops by!

23 October 2012

Yesterday’s late breakfast companion took me completely by surprise. Wow… this is a species I have never expected to visit my garden. Fortunately, whilst preparing breakfast in my kitchen, I paused to look out the window en route to the fridge and spotted the male Great Spotted Woodpecker feeding from a peanut feeder. I can’t… Read More Oh my… a Great Spotted Woodpecker pops by!

Early October visitor: Red Admiral Butterfly

13 October 2012

After September’s new garden visitor the Comma butterfly to my sunnier front garden, the Red Admiral butterfly has now made an appearance or two for October! Hurrah for some sunny, dry afternoons/early evenings to get out and watch them… with a camera to hand of course 😉 What a delight it is to see butterflies… Read More Early October visitor: Red Admiral Butterfly

New garden visitor: Comma Butterfly

30 September 2012

Spotted feeding on a Sedum a week ago, my cameras captured images and my books confirmed an ID to be the Comma Butterfly. I always love to see a new visitor to my garden. The interesting story on this species is that back in the 20th Century it was in serious decline and in recent… Read More New garden visitor: Comma Butterfly

e-petition to stop badger cull

18 September 2012

“• Over 70% of the badger population in large areas of the country will be killed, many of them healthy. • The method of free-shooting badgers could cause severe to many thousands of badgers. • Independent scientific studies have shown that culling would be of little help in reducing bovine TB, and even suggest that… Read More e-petition to stop badger cull

GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
