#30DaysWild Day 24 – Wildlife pond plant list

24 June 2016

Strictly speaking this isn’t a ‘doing something for wildlife, Day 24’ but more of a ‘one I prepared earlier’. However, this is something I’ve done for the wildlife currently living in my pond so that makes it completely relevant to now. October 2013 saw the liner go down for a new wildlife pond. The water… Read More #30DaysWild Day 24 – Wildlife pond plant list

#30DaysWild Day23 – Bat reflections

23 June 2016

Completely unexpected was the successful capture of bats in flight last night – albeit in an unconventional way. It wasn’t the plan. Bats are way too fast to even attempt to follow, far less focus on especially with a basic video camera. The plan had been to leave a video camera recording over the pond… Read More #30DaysWild Day23 – Bat reflections

#30DaysWild Day 22 – Shelter for froglets

22 June 2016

Preparing for a positive outcome in the wildlife pond, that some tadpoles escape being eaten by Damselfly nymphs and make it to froglet stage, tonight’s gardening job was extra plant cover for their emergence from the water. A Gunnera plant (commonly known as giant rhubarb) wouldn’t be the first plant to spring to mind for… Read More #30DaysWild Day 22 – Shelter for froglets

#30DaysWild Day 21 – Scottish Bat Survey

21 June 2016

A BBC News item caught my eye on my phone this morning – “Volunteers sought for Scottish bat survey”. Now, that’s something I haven’t done this year – sit on my arbour seat and watch bats fly around the garden as the sun sets. Note to self – a plan for tonight! Volunteers are being… Read More #30DaysWild Day 21 – Scottish Bat Survey

#30DaysWild Day 20 – Feeder port drop solved

20 June 2016

Inspector Clouseau I’m not. I didn’t even know a crime was even being committed at my 12-port bird feeder. Perhaps ‘a crime’ is a bit strong – an act of vandalism is more accurate. Accidental damage would be the plea from the suspect. Evidence of a feeder port and a perching loop has been recovered… Read More #30DaysWild Day 20 – Feeder port drop solved

#30DaysWild Day 19 – Bird feeder seed tray

19 June 2016

Today’s ‘do something for wildlife’ was a very quick and easy job. It will reduce the spilling of bird seed (mess and waste) and smaller birds will appreciate the extra space for landing, perching and feeding. Less trampling of plants below the feeder will be great too 🙂 Being Father’s Day here in the UK,… Read More #30DaysWild Day 19 – Bird feeder seed tray

#30DaysWild Day 18 – New pond visitor

18 June 2016

Warm sunshine brought us out into the garden to catch up on a few jobs today. It also had us by the wildlife pond edge looking closely for our tadpoles as few were being seen. A quick movement along the stems of the corkscrew rush caught our attention and it was a quick dash for… Read More #30DaysWild Day 18 – New pond visitor

#30DaysWild Day 17 – Perhaps not helping bees :-(

17 June 2016

Blogging for 10½ years has led the garden along many paths. Many shades of green and foliage plants have given way to colour and a variety of flower shapes in the borders. Taking photographs goes hand in hand with blogging and with the flowers came pollinators and many photo opportunites. Happy to be doing my… Read More #30DaysWild Day 17 – Perhaps not helping bees 🙁

#30DaysWild Day 16 – Change of use

16 June 2016

The garden building under assessment, having gone through planning and near completion, is a modest Bug Hotel. A luxury Frog House is the change of use currently being considered for this building. As this change is more suitable for the occupants of the surrounding area, it has been recommended for approval. Building works will resume… Read More #30DaysWild Day 16 – Change of use

#30DaysWild Day 15 – Mature Trees

15 June 2016

The rain has continued, making a free format approach to daily blog posts on doing something wild for nature more of a challenge. In theory, I did work with soil again but perhaps weeding in gravel and between paving slabs doesn’t really count. It certainly doesn’t sound very connecting to nature like – I got… Read More #30DaysWild Day 15 – Mature Trees

GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
