Song Thrush and black berry surprise

27 May 2015

Ivy flowers on the garden pergola have been discussed in a previous blog post back in November 2011. Black ivy berries to follow have been suggested in other blog comments as food for the Woodpigeon too, further suggesting the promise of Bed and Breakfast for a pair of Woodpigeons that nested there last year. As… Read More Song Thrush and black berry surprise

… and the potentially noisy neighbours are…

5 May 2015

… Woodpigeons and sorry Mr & Mrs Robin, we were here first! We enjoy preening in the morning sunshine on the roof of the pergola and we enjoy a bit of exercise jumping across its rafters. Then there is the great central location with a lookout over the whole garden – especially towards the potting… Read More … and the potentially noisy neighbours are…

A very bothered hedgehog

19 October 2014

No, I don’t want the house to fall down but I’m huffing and puffing so you get the message that I’m not happy and want you to leave! Clearly you’ve heard that Hedgehog Manor has a reputation for good food located in a hidden garden setting. What about the one table policy in mid July?… Read More A very bothered hedgehog

The Gardenwatch Report: FEB 2014

7 March 2014

A monthly garden history covering all aspects of the garden in the form of a Gardenwatch Report seems like a useful plan to refer back to. As the garden year is picking up speed, it’s easy to forget some of the garden work, flowers and sightings that didn’t make blog posts, diaries or notebooks. My… Read More The Gardenwatch Report: FEB 2014

Replacement birdbath bowl

22 August 2013

Replacing the bowl part of my favourite birdbath was something I never considered after two extremely cold winters finally took their toll and it split completely in two! I never even knew there were replacement bowls available if I went searching online. Since then, my bowl-less pedestal has lived on as a landing break for… Read More Replacement birdbath bowl

Wildflower Wednesday: my April garden

25 April 2013

It was almost midnight last night (here in Scotland) when I uploading the photos to join others celebrating wildflowers. So I missed the boat for Wednesday perhaps, but I did stop my garden potting shed re-org when there was enough light to wander round my garden to see if I actually had any wildflowers in… Read More Wildflower Wednesday: my April garden

Hedgehogs visiting garden again :-)

23 April 2013

Yay… Hedgehog Manor (recycled guinea pig hutch embedded in garden border) is open to diners once again! Sunflower hearts were on offer during the snowy spell in late March, just in case any hungry hedgehogs newly emerged from hibernation were out and about. There was also a dish of water available as they would also… Read More Hedgehogs visiting garden again 🙂

Garden Hedgehog Latest

27 April 2012

The good news is that the current survey at Hedgehog Street has received 46 hedgehog sightings from my garden since March 2nd. That’s just the ones I see Live too. Without a doubt the real number will be higher. If you see hedgehog visitors in your garden, outside your garden, alive or dead the The… Read More Garden Hedgehog Latest

Look out… hedgehogs & danger about!

7 March 2012

Does anyone else think they are seeing hedgehogs out of hibernation early this year? March 2nd seems early for my area of Scotland. However, we really haven’t had the coldest of winters so perhaps that is why they are out of hibernation now. Being addicted to evening watching for hedgehog visitors live via an IR… Read More Look out… hedgehogs & danger about!

F.A.O. Everyone who joined the RSPB last weekend with their Big Garden Birdwatch: I hope you enjoyed your bird count and now I’d like to invite you to wander along to Hedgehog Street. GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
