Squirrel feeder nearly found

26 November 2016

Tomorrow may be the day when a new garden visitor finds a feeder put up especially for it! Containing a good mix of nuts, the red squirrel will need to learn how to use the hinged roof to get at the food. This is going to be fun to watch, take photos of and capture… Read More Squirrel feeder nearly found

Red Squirrel returns to cache food

17 November 2016

Now… I can properly claim to having had our native red squirrel visit my garden! This is fantastic news and I’m hoping it indicates that the smaller charismatic red squirrel is recovering against the larger greys, whose arrival to the UK has led to it becoming seriously endangered. This could be evidence towards a positive… Read More Red Squirrel returns to cache food

A new gardenwatch era begins

7 August 2014

This summer has gone swimmingly with so many days of warm sunshine which have kept me busy in the garden and away from the PC. I have to confess to have been enjoying this PC/blogging free time. Reconnecting with my garden has been great! I feel refreshed 🙂 Many garden jobs that were on that… Read More A new gardenwatch era begins

Early October visitor: Red Admiral Butterfly

13 October 2012

After September’s new garden visitor the Comma butterfly to my sunnier front garden, the Red Admiral butterfly has now made an appearance or two for October! Hurrah for some sunny, dry afternoons/early evenings to get out and watch them… with a camera to hand of course 😉 What a delight it is to see butterflies… Read More Early October visitor: Red Admiral Butterfly

Is there anything in there?

12 November 2008

Ironing… perhaps not a way you would expect to watch for wildlife. For the last two evenings I have been almost glued to the computer screen after an unexpected turn of events. Sorry… no emails no browsing, no blogging. Any guesses on what has been going on? Mm… I am still at the speculation point… Read More Is there anything in there?

Is there anything out there?

6 November 2008

Some things shouldn’t be and others? Well, I’m really not sure… Today, I actually planned to save ‘The Cosmos’. Oh dear… that is going to have to wait until tomorrow now! Ah… the ‘to do list’ in the garden that just grows at this time of year. Autumn, really is quite a mysterious season don’t… Read More Is there anything out there?

Cold nights for plants, ponds and hedgehogs

29 October 2008

The cold snap that we are having here is sending gardener’s into action to protect plants for the winter – especially ones new to the garden. Recently I’ve had comments on my posting from last year on what I do with my Gunnera. However, one comment has sparked this extra posting: “…..it’s stopped raining but… Read More Cold nights for plants, ponds and hedgehogs

Hedgehog House for Rent

1 November 2007

It has been a little while since I have mentioned hedgehog visits in my garden. I have continued to put food and water out but it hasn’t always been taken. The nights are getting colder and I am very aware that our hedgehog may be preparing to hibernate for the winter. We had planned to… Read More Hedgehog House for Rent

GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
