April hedgehog visitors & videos

30 April 2022

April 2022 has been, to date, THE best hedgehog watching via the garden cameras in all my time blogging! What a very special gardenwatching month this has been. Eleven videos in one blog post does seem a bit excessive but it was really hard knocking footage down to even that! As the hedgehog is a… Read More April hedgehog visitors & videos

Fascinating frogs, spawn and newts

7 April 2022

2022 saw our earliest frog spawning to date here in Perthshire, Scotland. It arrived unexpectedly on 15th March just as the opportunity of bright, warmer days made for a bit of a garden tidy. Clearing leaves and thinning out pond plants was top of the list but the job was half done when the spawn… Read More Fascinating frogs, spawn and newts

Hoping hedgehog awareness continues

8 May 2021

Today may be the last day of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society’s annual Hedgehog Awareness Week for 2021, but for the survival of this species our awareness needs to continue. Nature websites and social media are full of valuable information, especially from dedicated carers and rescue centres who are happy to answer questions. Reading and… Read More Hoping hedgehog awareness continues

Red squirrel sightings & sounds

18 July 2020

A red squirrel sitting just two metres away puts a whole different spin on social distancing. In a positive way for both numbers of this endgangered native mammal and a gardenwatcher living with someone on the shielded list. A garden supply of peanuts benefited us both back at the beginning of July. Social media is… Read More Red squirrel sightings & sounds

Red squirrel inside feeder during sleet shower

23 December 2016

Christmas came early this year with the arrival of red squirrels to the garden. What a great privilege this has been to see. We’ve had another garden sighting of two red squirrels at the same time but this time them both got a start at seeing the other and ran off in different directions. Both… Read More Red squirrel inside feeder during sleet shower

Clothes peg help for red squirrels

10 December 2016

Fantastic news, red squirrels have continued to visit the garden and are showing just how photogenic they are. When they stay still long enough to photograph that is. Video captures are another matter entirely, more patience and the right timing is required there. It’s fair to say that red squirrels are keeping me alert at… Read More Clothes peg help for red squirrels

Red squirrel number doubles!

29 November 2016

It’s fair to say that when a bird, butterfly, damselfly or in this case the red squirrel visits the garden, unless there is more than one at any given time or a distinctive difference in its appearance (like partial albino or missing feathers) you have no idea if it is the same individual returning. Having… Read More Red squirrel number doubles!

GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
