April hedgehog visitors & videos

30 April 2022

April 2022 has been, to date, THE best hedgehog watching via the garden cameras in all my time blogging! What a very special gardenwatching month this has been. Eleven videos in one blog post does seem a bit excessive but it was really hard knocking footage down to even that! As the hedgehog is a… Read More April hedgehog visitors & videos

#30DaysWild Days 3 & 4 – Evening sounds and ants

4 June 2018

Weather-wise, Day 3 for 30 Days Wild was much cooler, thank-goodness! We had clouds but we didn’t see much rain. On my mid evening garden wander, I could hear swifts calling but couldn’t see them through the clouds. I decided that would be my contribution – last bird sounds from the evening garden. I, for… Read More #30DaysWild Days 3 & 4 – Evening sounds and ants

Red squirrel inside feeder during sleet shower

23 December 2016

Christmas came early this year with the arrival of red squirrels to the garden. What a great privilege this has been to see. We’ve had another garden sighting of two red squirrels at the same time but this time them both got a start at seeing the other and ran off in different directions. Both… Read More Red squirrel inside feeder during sleet shower

Pond dipping video camera films again!

12 August 2015

There was a deep inhale of breath as the tripod toppled and the video camera entered the water in the garden pond! A quick arm’s reach to catch a tripod leg stopped the whole camera going fully under water. Okay, so I have been secretly wishing for an underwater camera to see all that’s living… Read More Pond dipping video camera films again!

A very bothered hedgehog

19 October 2014

No, I don’t want the house to fall down but I’m huffing and puffing so you get the message that I’m not happy and want you to leave! Clearly you’ve heard that Hedgehog Manor has a reputation for good food located in a hidden garden setting. What about the one table policy in mid July?… Read More A very bothered hedgehog

The timing of the Comma butterfly

10 September 2014

Perched high up on the small, dense flower clusters of Verbena bonariensis, in my back garden back at the end of August, the Comma butterfly looked like an aircraft about to take off. It’s easy to see how nature could influence engineering design isn’t it? Tears filled my eyes as I looked through my camera… Read More The timing of the Comma butterfly

Wildlife Videos: Noisy Tawny Owls

12 February 2014

It wasn’t just the picture from the fascinating piece of video footage from an Owl nestbox, I came across on Twitter over the weekend, that made this capture catch my attention. We have heard strange noises from our garden but have never seen the Tawny Owls who were confirmed as being the mystery voices at… Read More Wildlife Videos: Noisy Tawny Owls

Welcome… Buddleja ‘Buzz Ivory’

17 January 2014

In Autumn 2013, Buddleja ‘Buzz Ivory’ arrived in my garden. Plant Breeders’ Thompson & Morgan claim this plant to be a hardy shrub. I do hope this is the case as I am a bit nervous at the moment, knowing, that it is yet to feel a good Scottish winter cold snap growing here in… Read More Welcome… Buddleja ‘Buzz Ivory’

Osprey – the ultimate fisher

16 June 2013

During the Osprey season at the SWT Loch of the Lowes Reserve near Dunkeld (Scotland), as yet, I have never seen Ospreys fishing in front of the hides. They will do it on occasions and I can very easily imagine the delight on the faces of visitors that catch a glimpse of this sight. Perhaps… Read More Osprey – the ultimate fisher

Wildflower Wednesday: my April garden

25 April 2013

It was almost midnight last night (here in Scotland) when I uploading the photos to join others celebrating wildflowers. So I missed the boat for Wednesday perhaps, but I did stop my garden potting shed re-org when there was enough light to wander round my garden to see if I actually had any wildflowers in… Read More Wildflower Wednesday: my April garden

GARDENWATCH

I’d encourage everyone to gardenwatch, now more than ever. You just never know what you might see when you look more closely. I’d guess you’d be in for quite a few surprises, just as I have. A good start is a dish of fresh water for thirsty hedgehogs and birds and any kind of bird feeder. A warning here – one will lead to another. Our gardens really can be mini nature reserves which is great for us to enjoy and seriously helps struggling wildlife.

There are three favourite locations to gardenwatch in my garden, all at different times of the day. Breakfast, through a window with a notebook recording activity at the feeders. Lunchtime, on a bench by the pond watching what is attracted there – lots. Late evening is the last, live watching night garden activity through four IR cameras – addictive!
